A transmission fluid exchange at Perfect Lube replaces the worn fluid in your automatic transmission with the exact type your manufacturer specifies, and it starts with a check of the fluid you already have. If the fluid on the dipstick is still red and clear, we tell you it is fine and you keep your money. If it has already turned black and smells burnt, the industry-recommended move on a high-mileage transmission is to leave it alone rather than exchange it, and we will tell you that too. Call (650) 394-5374 for pricing on your model.

What the service is

Transmission fluid does two jobs: it lubricates the gears and clutches inside the transmission, and it carries away the heat they make. Over tens of thousands of miles the fluid picks up tiny clutch particles and breaks down, and a transmission running on worn fluid shifts harder, runs hotter, and wears faster. A fluid exchange drains the old fluid and refills it with new fluid to the correct level. We do not replace the transmission filter.

Why it matters

Transmission repairs are among the most expensive jobs on a car, and most of them start with fluid that was left in too long. Fresh fluid is cheap insurance. It also matters what fluid goes in: many transmissions require a specific fluid type, and the wrong one can cause shudder or slipping within a few hundred miles. We use the fluid your manufacturer lists for your transmission.

When it is due

There is no single answer, so we go by your owner's manual. Many manufacturers list 30,000 to 60,000 miles for automatic transmissions, and some newer cars list longer or call the fluid 'lifetime'. The Car Care Council's consumer guide suggests having the fluid and filter serviced every 24,000 to 36,000 miles on most vehicles. If you tow, sit in Peninsula stop-and-go traffic most days, or drive short trips that never warm the transmission up, the shorter end of the range fits you.

Signs you need it

  • Shifts that feel harsh, delayed, or that slip under acceleration
  • A whine or hum that changes with gear, not with engine speed
  • Fluid on the dipstick that looks brown or smells burnt instead of red and clear
  • A warning light or a transmission temperature message
  • You are past the mileage in your owner's manual and have never had it done

What is included

  • Fluid condition check on the dipstick before we recommend anything
  • Drain of the old transmission fluid
  • Refill with the fluid type your manufacturer specifies, set to the correct level
  • A short drive-and-shift check before you leave

What it looks like in practice

Say you drive a 2018 crossover with 74,000 miles, mostly the 101 commute between San Carlos and Palo Alto. You have never had the transmission touched. We pull the dipstick and the fluid is a few shades darker than new but still smells normal. That is a straightforward exchange, and your next check is in about 40,000 miles. If the fluid had come out black and burnt-smelling instead, we would tell you to see a transmission specialist rather than exchange it ourselves, since flushing badly degraded fluid on a high-mileage transmission can do more harm than good.

Our rule on this service

We do not sell transmission service by a mileage chart. If the fluid is clean and you are inside your manufacturer's interval, we say so. If the fluid is already black and burnt, industry guidance is to leave it alone rather than exchange it, and we will tell you that too rather than perform the service anyway. We do not replace the transmission filter.

Transmission Fluid Exchange questions

How much does a transmission fluid exchange cost in San Carlos?

Pricing depends on how much fluid your transmission holds and whether it uses a specialty fluid, so it varies by model. Call (650) 394-5374 with your year, make, and model and we will quote it straight over the phone.

Is a fluid exchange the same as a transmission flush?

No. A fluid exchange drains what comes out on its own and refills it, which replaces most of the fluid. A flush uses a machine to push all of the old fluid out. We do not flush transmissions, and most manufacturers recommend against flushing older, high-mileage ones. If your fluid is already burnt, we will tell you to see a transmission specialist instead of performing either service.

Can I get the transmission serviced during my oil change?

Often yes. Mention it when you drive in and we will check the fluid during the oil change. Most transmission services add some time beyond the usual 10-minute oil change, and we will tell you how long before we start.

What if my manual says the fluid is lifetime?

Some manufacturers call their fluid lifetime, and some of those same manufacturers list a service interval for severe use, which describes most Bay Area commuting. We will read what your manual says for your driving and give you a straight recommendation.
