Save up to $20 on an oil change

Perfect Lube replaces both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter, and we pull the old filter and hold it up for you before we recommend a new one. If it is still clean, it goes back in and you pay nothing. Most filter replacements happen during the oil change while you sit in your car. Call (650) 394-5374 for pricing on your vehicle.

What the service is

Your car has two air filters. The engine air filter sits in a plastic box under the hood and keeps dust, leaves, and road grit out of the engine. The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box or under the dash and cleans the air that comes through your vents. Both are pleated paper elements that trap dirt until they clog.

Why it matters

A clogged engine filter makes the engine work harder to breathe. On older cars that shows up as lost power and worse fuel economy; on modern fuel-injected cars the computer compensates, but a badly restricted filter still hurts acceleration. A clogged cabin filter is easier to notice: weak airflow from the vents, a musty smell when the fan comes on, and more pollen and dust inside the car during Peninsula allergy season.

When it is due

Most manufacturers list the engine air filter at 15,000 to 30,000 miles and the cabin filter at 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but dirt, not mileage, is what matters. A car parked under trees or driven on dusty roads clogs a filter faster. We look at yours during every oil change, so you never have to guess.

Signs you need it

  • Weak airflow from the vents even with the fan on high
  • A musty or dusty smell when the climate system starts
  • Slower acceleration or worse gas mileage than you remember
  • Visible dirt, leaves, or insects packed into the pleats when we hold the filter up
  • It has been more than a year and you cannot remember the last one

What is included

  • Engine air filter removed and shown to you side by side with a new one
  • Cabin air filter removed and shown to you
  • Replacement of either filter, or both, only when you say yes
  • Filters sized for your vehicle, installed with the airbox sealed properly
  • No extra wait: done during the oil change in most cars

What it looks like in practice

Say you drive a 2019 SUV that lives on a tree-lined street in Belmont. At your oil change we pull the engine filter and it comes out with leaves and a moth in the pleats. You see it, you say yes, and the new one is in before the oil finishes draining. Your neighbor's 2023 sedan, garaged and eight months old, gets its filter shown, judged clean, and put back for free.

Our rule on this service

We never replace a filter you did not see. If it is clean, it goes back in.

Air Filter Replacement questions

How much is an air filter replacement in San Carlos?

It varies by vehicle because filter sizes and prices differ by model. Call (650) 394-5374 with your year, make, and model for a quote on the engine filter, the cabin filter, or both.

What is the difference between the engine air filter and the cabin air filter?

The engine air filter protects the engine from dirt in the air it burns. The cabin air filter cleans the air you breathe inside the car. They are different parts in different places, and one being dirty does not mean the other is.

Do I need to change the air filter at every oil change?

No. A filter usually lasts several oil changes. We check it at each visit and only recommend replacement when it is visibly dirty.

Can I bring my own filter?

Call ahead and ask. In most cases we can install a filter you bring, though we carry filters sized for most vehicles on the Peninsula and can usually have the right one in hand during your visit.
