What the service is
Coolant, also called antifreeze, is the fluid that carries heat away from the engine to the radiator. It also carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the water pump, the radiator, and the heater core. Those inhibitors are used up over time, and old coolant slowly turns acidic and starts eating the parts it was meant to protect. A coolant exchange, what most people call a coolant flush, replaces that worn fluid with fresh coolant mixed to the right ratio.
Why it matters
The most expensive cooling system failures, a blown head gasket or a cracked radiator, usually start with neglected coolant. Fresh coolant keeps the engine at the right temperature on a hot day on 101 and keeps the heater working in January. It also matters which coolant goes in: engines are designed around specific coolant chemistries, and mixing the wrong types can form sludge. We use the type your manufacturer lists.
When it is due
Go by your owner's manual. Our coolant is a long-life formula rated for 100,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first, so we check the fluid instead of quoting a shorter number. Some quick-lube chains recommend a coolant flush every 15,000 miles; we do not, because that is far more frequent than what most manufacturers or our own coolant spec call for.

- Coolant in the reservoir looks rusty, cloudy, or has floating particles
- The heater blows lukewarm air when the engine is fully warm
- A sweet smell after driving, or a puddle under the front of the car

Yes. We top off coolant as part of every oil change at no extra charge. A top-off is fine when the level is a little low and the fluid is clean. If the fluid is dirty, topping off only dilutes the problem, and we will tell you.
Is a coolant flush necessary if the car is not overheating?
Sometimes. Coolant loses its corrosion protection before it loses its ability to cool, so a car can run at normal temperature while the old coolant is quietly damaging the water pump and radiator. The interval in your manual exists to prevent that, which is why we go by it.
